AUTHOR
Ms. Katy Steklac was born and raised in southeastern Michigan and is a 2013 graduate of Central Michigan University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education with Magna Cum Laude honors. While at CMU, she was principal bassoonist of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and was president of the Delta Iota chapter of Delta Omicron, a professional music fraternity.
From 2014-2017, she taught elementary general music and elementary and middle school band at South Canton Scholars Charter Academy in Canton, Michigan. Upon completion of her first year at South Canton, she was selected by her colleagues as Teacher of the Year. She and her area music colleagues collaborated to establish the first National Heritage Academies Canton Region Solo and Ensemble Festival in 2016, which has since become an annual event involving hundreds of students. In addition, she led groups of middle schoolers on trips to Costa Rica and Greece. In Fall 2017, she began a new adventure serving as the Head Director of Bands at Beach Middle School and Assistant Director of Bands at Chelsea High School, her alma mater. She is fortunate to coteach alongside her high school band director, Rick Catherman. Her middle school bands have earned Superior and Excellent ratings at district band festivals since her appointment. When she is not teaching, Ms. Steklac loves to spend time with friends and family.
